How gold prices work in Sri Lanka
Gold prices in Sri Lanka follow the international gold price, converted to Sri Lankan rupees, so they move with the world market and with the dollar rate. The price you see depends on the karat: 24K is pure gold, and lower karats are priced in proportion to the gold they contain.
Sri Lankans usually quote gold by the pawn, which is 8 grams. The table above lets you switch between pawn, gram and ounce so you can compare prices in the unit you use.
Gold price questions
What is the gold price in Sri Lanka today?
The table above shows today's buying and selling price for 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K, 14K and 9K gold, per pawn, per gram and per ounce. Prices follow the market and are refreshed through the day.
How much is one pawn of gold?
In Sri Lanka a pawn (also called a sovereign) is 8 grams of gold. Switch the table to Pawn to see the price for 8 grams, or to Gram for the price of a single gram.
What is the difference between 24K and 22K gold?
24K is pure gold (100%). 22K is 91.6% gold and is the standard for jewellery in Sri Lanka, because the added metals make it harder wearing. 21K, 18K, 14K and 9K contain progressively less gold, so their prices are lower.
Why are the buying price and the selling price different?
The buying price is what you receive when you sell gold. The selling price is what you pay when you buy gold. The small gap between them covers the cost of handling and the market spread.
